REVIVE PROGRAM

REVIVE PROGRAM IN 2023

DEFINITION

The Karayuna Learning Centre will provide The Revive Program to all local Primary and High schools. The centre is committed to a pro-active early intervention strategy that will support schools and the student in dealing with the behaviour and to prevent total disengagement with the student’s education and consequent suspension.

Please note that Suspended students’ applications and positions will always have precedence over student in the Revive Program.

The Revive Program starts in Term 2.

PURPOSE

The Karayuna Learning centre who will be delivering The Revive Program will:

  • form part of a range of behaviour support services for students with disruptive behaviours, such as school learning and support team interventions, individual planning, learning and support teacher interventions and/or Assistant Principal, Learning and Support interventions
  • increase the capacity of schools to deal successfully with disruptive student behaviour
  • assist students to make a successful re-entry to their census school.

This program is not an alternative to a suspension. If behaviour warrants a suspension, then this must be applied in accordance to the Department of education guidelines.

GENERAL OPERATIONAL PRINCIPLES

 The Karayuna Learning centre:

  • will be established and managed under the auspices of the local School Services executive
  • will oversee the development and implementation of The Revive Program.
  • Revive Program students will remain the responsibility of the census school and strong links will be maintained throughout the period of attendance at the suspension centre
  • expectations will mirror the census school expectations
  • length of stay will be no more than 15 school days/3 weeks
  • students will need to return to school after they finish at the centre at 1.00pm.
  • it will be the parent’s responsibility to transport their child back up to the school after 1.00pm.
  • students will be referred to their census school principal if their behaviour is such that it threatens the safety of other students or is seriously disruptive whilst they are in the centre.

GOAL

It is anticipated that the goals of the program will be to assist students to:

  • Engage and take responsibility as active learners
  • Think critically
  • Reflect on and understand their behaviour and its consequences
  • Communicate effectively
  • Develop positive attitudes towards their schooling
  • Build capacity and understanding of students in how to re-engage at school, re-integrate positive work habits, and prevent recurrence of inappropriate behaviour

TARGET POPULATION

Students who:

  • Have had a Formal Notice of Caution letter sent to home.
  • Have been referred to the Learning Support Team and who have not responded to preventative measures implemented by their census school e.g. Behaviour Contract, Socials Skills, Work Adjustments.
  • Have an Individual Behaviour Support Plan, Behaviour Response Plan or a Risk Assessment Plan.
  • Are currently enrolled in the school that is applying for a placement
  • Have been attending this school regularly for at least 2 weeks
  • Are in Year 7, 8 or deemed an appropriate candidate by the applying school.
  • Would readily participate in such a program.
  • Have the ability to get back to the census school after 1.00pm

DURATION

Students can be on the Revive Program for up to three (3) weeks, but this can’t proceed a suspension.

OPERATIONAL GUIDELINES

Referral:

  • Census school is to gain parental approval to attend the program before approaching the Karayuna Learning Centre.
  • The census school must ensure that the students can be transported back to school after 1.00pm. If students are not going back to school after 1.00pm than the school will need to fill in a PDE (Part-Day exemption Form) and obtain necessary signatures.
  • Students will be nominated by the census school through the Learning Support Team to participate in the Revive Program at the Karayuna Learning Centre.
  • The census school completes an application form (found on the website) and submits it to the Karayuna Learning Centre, with their Risk assessment/behaviour modification plans.
  • Once approved the KLC staff will contact the school and parents with the start date.
  • Entry into the Revive Program must be preceded by an interview with the parents/carers and the student.
  • The expectations and role of the Revive Program will be clearly communicated to the parents/carers and students by the Head Teacher.

Prior to the Student Placement:

  • Would be ideal to undertake an observation of the student prior to placement in program – this could be done by the teacher or SLSO.
  • The school will provide appropriate work to the Karayuna Learning Centre.
  • Nomination of a case manager who is willing to mentor the student and also visit the centre while the student is in the program

Attendance

  • Attendance and progress will be provided to the census school through the sentral system.
  • The head teacher of the Karayuna Learning Centre will complete the Special Circumstance Register for the period that the student attends the centre.

Parent Meeting:

  • Every student who attends the program will need to have a parent/carer and student interview outlining the expectations of the program.
  • Individual and parent goals will be established at this time.
  • The staff at the Karayuna Learning Centre will have contact with the parents/carers throughout the student’s participation in the program.

Post-Program Follow-up:

  • After the placement, the Head Teacher will prepare a report and send it to the school Learning Support Team, School Counsellor, classroom teachers and school executive. The report is also placed on the students sentral profile.
  • Staff at the Karayna Learning Centre will also monitor the student once they get back to school. This will be through sentral – well-being and when appropriate the teacher will check-in on the student when they are back at school.

MANAGEMENT

  • The Karayuna Learning Centre management committee will oversee the Revive Program.
  • The Head Teacher will provide a written report at the Committee meetings.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:

SUSPENDED STUDENTS HAVE PRECEDENCE OVER THE REVIVE PROGRAM STUDENTS

  • If a student has started a placement and then a suspended application is submitted - The Revive program student may stay TILL THE END OF THE CURRENT WEEK, then they will be asked to return to their census school. The Karayuna staff will inform the home school when this occurs and the date the student is expected to return to their home school.

The school is to inform parents that the KLC will contact them for an interview.

Students are NOT to just turn up to the centre.
